You know the adage, “Work to Live, Don’t Live to Work”? I try to live by those words every single day, except that I would change it a bit to “work to travel.” There is absolutely nothing I enjoy more than exploring a new place, whether it’s going to a different country or exploring the areas right here around Chicago. I was bit by the travel bug when I was a child and I really don’t think I will ever recover.
I don’t have many regrets from college, but I really wish I had taken the time to study abroad. I’m jealous of all of my friends who had the opportunity to traipse all over Europe for a semester because honestly, there’s nothing I would like to do more. I think being a travel blogger or a travel writer would be my ideal job because I would like to see every single inch of this magnificent earth!
Unfortunately, a life on the road isn’t really feasible at this point in time, so I spend my days researching future vacations. Whenever I have free time there is a good chance you’ll find me reading up on vacations I don’t plan on taking for another decade. It’s almost like window shopping – the anticipation is almost as fun as the real thing!
While I would be happy to live in hotels as we toured the world, we’re not rich and I haven’t figured out how to grow a money tree. We scrimp and save throughout the year so that we can see the world inch by inch. In addition to saving, we take advantage of credit card points, and save up our airline miles, hotel points, and rental car credits. I track flight prices when we’re planning a big trip so we can pay the least amount possible. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make our various trips a reality!
If you want to travel but don’t have a lot of extra income another way you can save is by checking out some of the daily deal sites. Groupon, in particular, often has some really awesome travel deals available! I’ve also found great deals on hotels through Jetsetter, which is Gilt’s travel site.
Honestly, even if we were rich I don’t think I would plan my trips any other way. By saving, and figuring out points and miles and credits, I spend most of each year planning for my next vacation. Ultimately this gives me an excuse to do a little bit of day dreaming year-round.
