This week, I was invited to an event for Spa Week. While the event was held in NYC, Spa Week takes place all over the country. From October 10 – 16, enjoy spa treatments for just $50. There are still appointments left, so no matter where you live, if you are interested in scoring a discounted treatment, I say book ASAP!
While I was at the event though at Spa Merge on Monday, I snacked on some cheese, fruit and got myself a complimentary manicure. More importantly though, my friend who came to the event with me took advantage of a free mini facial. Rather than continue to eat more cheese and wait for my friend, I decided to pop in and learn more about facials. After all, I never had one before so figured I’d see what all the hype was about.
First, the aesthetician, Mariana, cleaned my friend’s face, and gave goggles to my friend (similar to the ones you get in a tanning bed) so she could use a magnifying lamp to examine her skin cells. She said that just by looking at the skin cells she could tell my friend was active, but she could do a better job cleaning her face.
So I asked…what should you do when you wash your face? I know, we all have our own routine, but I wanted to hear what an expert had to say.
Mariana advised to use a cotton pad from any drug store with a pea-size amount of cleanser on the pad. She said she recommends using a cotton pad because it gives you control when washing your face. As you wash your face, you should push your skin upwards, from your chin, in the direction of a smile. After you use a cleanser, you should always use a toner. A toner helps remove any gunk that is left on your face and helps balance the ph level of your skin. Mariana advised to avoid the eye area when using a toner, and stressed how important the toner is. She said to think about it this way- you could have the most expensive moisturizer in the world, but who cares because your skin needs to be clean in order for moisturizer to work effectively. She added too that when you start seeing lines and wrinkles on a face, it is a sign that you need moisturizer – so ladies, keep that in mind!
Since I was with such an expert, I asked Mariana if she had any product recommendations and she said she really liked SkinCeuticals, particularly the mild cream cleanser. While she admitted it was more expensive ($27 on Amazon), she did add that you can use three times less of it than you would of a normal cleanser, so the cost can compare to what’s already in your bathroom.
Thanks, Mariana, for all these tips and hope you all are able to scoop up some discounted Spa Week treatments!
