I had the opportunity to test drive Subaru’s new site, FirstCarStory.com, and it was a ton of fun. Above you can see the little video I put together. All it took was a few minutes of time and a whole lot of memories!

In the video above I share how I used my first car to go on many road trips and all of them to New York City! In the particular story I share above, a friend and I set out from Michigan en route to New York City on the eve of my 21st birthday before our senior year of college. We made it to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania before my car broke down and for some reason it took six hours for a tow truck to reach us! Once they found us they were able to fix the problem quickly and we were on our way again. I was celebrating with my best friends at 3 a.m. because thankfully NYC really never sleeps!

Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention that my 21st birthday was three weeks before 9/11. So, while I look back on my birthday party with fondness, the second memory that comes to mind is taking the same road trip out east the following summer and crying the first time the skyline came into view. By that point I had come to view New York as “my” city and seeing the devastation in person was unbearable.

Dang, was I stylish or what?

It’s funny how the two biggest memories I have of my car involve such opposite emotions. There’s no denying that with each road trip I took to New York City I felt like I was going home.

Everyone loved their first car. No matter how beat up or broken down, it was a taste of freedom and you loved it. Even though it lasted only for a brief time, that emotional connection is an experience that unites us all.
