What I Received in My January PopSugar Must Have Box

by Lisa on January 24th, 2014

It’s one of my favorite times of the month again – time to go through the PopSugar Must Have Box! This monthly subscription box is usually one of my favorites because it usually comes packed with new/fun items for women and this month is no exception!

Here’s what I received in my January PopSugar Must Have Box:

Jack + Lucy Tech Gloves

Jack + Lucy Tech Gloves – For whatever reason I cannot find Jack + Lucy online, or find anyone selling these tech gloves, so I have no idea what the value may be. (I did spot plenty of people selling re-selling these gloves on eBay for about $15 though.) Despite not knowing anything about the company, I’ve worn these gloves a couple of times and they’re super warm! Last night I tried using them with my iPhone and while I know smart gloves have existed for awhile I was amazed at how well they worked!

The Juice Generation Book

The Juice Generation Book ($15.93 at Amazon) – I think this book is one of those things people are going to either love or have no interest in. I have been meaning to pick up a juicing book ever since I got my Nutribullet so I could learn how to expand my repertoire of smoothies/juices. (Check out my Nutribullet review – I still love it!) However, prior to picking up the Nutribullet I really wouldn’t have had a use for it. The photography in this book is stunning and it provides so much more information than just recipes. It goes through the nutrients in fruit, the best way to cut the fruit, and so much more!

Beauty Reviewed: Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette & Liquid Liner

by Lisa on January 23rd, 2014

Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette

Back before the holidays Birchbox sent me their new and exclusive Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette ($20) and Cynthia Rowley Liquid Liner ($18) to try out. This has been my go-to palette since I received it in the mail, but it took until this week for me to actually take pictures of myself so I could show it off!

Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette

According to the description on the Birchbox website the colors in the palette include, “Clove, a deep matte brown; Sugarplum, a velvety taupe; Patina, a gold-speckled plum; Mink, a rich light brown; and Champagne, a shimmery gold highlight.” Before I read that description just now, I didn’t think of the Mink shade as a “rich light brown.” It has been my go-to shade in the palette and I would describe it as more of a pink champagne color. The actual champagne color is a fantastic highlighter that made me wish more eyeshadow palettes contained a light and slightly glittery color like this. Though the Patina has the gold specks through it, I don’t think the gold shows through at all. I was a bit disappointed by that! Actually, the Patina and Sugarplum are virtually identical once they’re applied.

Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette Day Look

When I was going to an office everyday I would never leave my house without applying makeup. My makeup tended to be pretty neutral; really, just enough so you could tell I made the effort. For this daytime look I applied a really light layer of the champagne color all the way up to my brows, and then covered my eyelids in the mink color. I used the clove color as an eyeliner alternative. I applied it all the way around my eye and then blended it out a bit from my top lash. I finished the look with a little bit of mascara, blush, and a neutral lip gloss.

Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette Night Look

The Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette is the perfect little palette to keep in your bag for those days when you’re heading out right after work. For this night look I darkened my lids a little with the patina, and then lined my lids with the Cynthia Rowley Liquid Liner. As I’ve noted many times now, I am really bad at using liquid liner and it took many trial and error sessions until I learned how to get this product to work best for me. I didn’t go overboard with the eyeliner, but I think it darkens up the look considerably. To complete the look I refreshed my mascara and applied a darker lip gloss.

Being able to achieve multiple looks using just one palette is awesome. This particular combination of colors is perfect for my skin tone and I can definitely see myself repurchasing the palette when it runs low! I’m still on the fence about the liquid liner, but I really think that’s really just a personal preference.

The Cynthia Rowley Eyeshadow Palette and Cynthia Rowley Liquid Liner are available exclusively in the Birchbox Store.

Cheap and Free eBooks

The Secret Life of Bees
I’ve been meaning to read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, author of  The Invention of Wings (check out my The Invention of Wings review), for awhile.I might have to make good on that intention, finally, because the Kindle version is on sale for just $3.99 today! This is an unannounced special price and I don’t expect it to last long! Click here to grab this book now!

Synopsis: Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed.  When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the town’s most vicious racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolina—a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of love—a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.
