Etsy Monday: OggleAesthetics

by Megan on May 21st, 2012

Today’s featured Etsy shop, OggleAesthetics totally made me squeal for joy. I This shop is full of fun and delightful vintage accessories. You all know I can’t get enough vintage! But don’t worry folks, it’s not ALL hair accessories. There is even more awesomeness in store!

Mustache Clip, Comb, Necklace, Brooch, or Headband

I have yet to figure out what it is about mustaches that makes me giggle. All I know is, I love them dearly. And I love options, so being able to choose what color I want is fab. I want one of each, please.

Tiered Statement Necklace in Silver, Mint, Olive, and Dijon

Folks, this necklace was what drew me to this shop. How amazing is it?! And the colors- I die!! This necklace surely makes a statement. LOVE.

Chic Houndstooth Headpiece w/ Buckle

I went to a bridal shower recently that was a tea party theme and we all wore hats and gloves. It was lovely. However, I hadn’t even realized how much I do adore hats and fascinators until I began to find one to wear. This one definitely made my list! “Built on a sturdy buckram frame, it is made with high quality ivory wool felt, a grey Russian netting overlay, a band of soft houndstooth fabric in black and grey, and a black plastic buckle – cinching the fabric to create a subtle bow silhouette.” Awesome.

And, because I know you all can’t stop drooling, here’s something that will surely make you pleased as punch! Andrea is offering you lovely readers 10% off using the code YTHANKU.

And, Andrea was kind enough to answer some questions. Enjoy!

1. What is your favorite item in your shop?

Right now? Either the tiered chartreuse fascinator (www.etsy.com/listing/95183184/chartreuse-pistachio-tiered-leaf), or the Penny Farthing bike shop set (www.etsy.com/listing/91541157/20-off-sale-penny-farthing-professional).

2. If you could make only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be- jewelry, fascinators, art, anything else?

Oh, agony! I’d have to go with art/design. Graphic design is what I do for a living, there are so many places to use it, and so many ways to approach it. It’s everywhere you look!

3. Where do you get your inspiration from?

My graphic design heros are Paula Scher and Saul Bass (brilliant logos), along with Stefan Sagmeister (out-of-the-box, hands-on, creative passion).
My accessories are inspired by fashion in general, particularly 1920s-40s, and modern day trends – always trying to take old or existing ideas and make them mine/current.
I think all artists, crafters, and designers are influenced by their peers to an extent; Etsy treasuries are a a great source of creative energy.
Lastly, as an aspiring clothing designer, great fabrics have sparked many a wild fashion sketch.

4. What is your favorite material to work with- felt, cloth, metal. etc.?

Felt, for sure. It can be manipulated in so many ways, and I hope to explore more of those in future projects.

Thanks, Andrea!

Etsy Monday: Buds and Blooms

by Megan on May 14th, 2012

Today’s featured Etsy shop, Buds and Blooms, features some of my favorite things: Bridal Veils, Fascinators and Feather Fashion Accessories. A girl can never wear too many feathers, right?!

Some of you reading this may be thinking, “Megan, we aren’t getting married”, but I imagine you have a wedding or two that you are planning on attending soon. Well, why not add a snazzy hairpiece to your outfit?! Or, some awesome jewelry. The possibilites are endless!

Yellow Feather Flower Fascinator

How goregous is this feather flower!? I have become obsessed with yellow as of lately, and I’m totally digging this! “This gorgeous single feather flower fascinator is made from an assortment of goose nagoire, biot and ostrich feathers tied together with decorative stamens.” This flower can be made with an alligator clip or as a comb, just be sure to specify which you prefer!

Blush – Blossom Earrings

These earrings are so lovely! I love the blush color and think these are totally unique. “These 2.5″ dangle flower earrings feature clear ab crystals, blush crystals and blush chiffon and organza flowers on lead free/nickel free silver wire and French backs.” I just may have to add these to my collection!

Flower Necklace

Words cannot express my love of this necklace. I love pearls and I love flowers, so this necklace has my name all over it! “This elegant bridal necklace features 3, 12″ strands of Swarovski Crystal Elements ivory pearls and golden shadow crystals with a small pale ivory chiffon and organza flower and gold chain with lobster claw closure. Findings and chain are lead free, nickel free.” LOVE.

Corrine was kind enough to answer some questions!

1 What is your favorite item in your shop?

This one is hard; because I’m fickle! Most things have been my “favourites” at one time or another. Each time I make something new I declare it my fave! This piece, though, is a best seller and can be worn with jeans out with your ladies or dressed up for a wedding or special event www.etsy.com/listing/97305089/small-feather-hair-comb-small-purple I keep coming back to this piece in lots of colours; so it’s definitely on the list of “all time favourites”. Though, it’s a long list!

2. Do you take custom orders?

I don’t take custom orders, in that I don’t take one-off design requests. However, I do offer colour customization and custom dye feathers in studio. The colours or types of embellishments can also be changed. I’m flexible within the no custom design rule.

3. What was the first piece(s) you ever created?

Hmm, tough question. I spent several months just creating pieces prior to opening a shop. Not all of these first design attempts made it into the store though. I’m sure the first thing I ever made was a fabric flower, but which one, or even which style, I have no idea.

4. What is your favorite color combination?

Though pastel colours are gorgeous; I’m more of a saturated colour kind of girl. Here again though, I don’t have a single most favourite colour or a single favourite colour scheme. Most of the pieces within my shop are monochromatic because that’s what’s most often purchased. Plus it’s easier to title your piece “purple feather clip” and get found by a buyer than “purple, cream, and gold feather clip “. I’m partial to unusual colour combos, using saturated colours. I love teal + yellow; but think it’s fabulous when people ask for creative combinations. I just made a bridal set in teal + hot pink + purple and another in purple + green + aqua.

Thanks Corrine!

Ok, brace yourself folks, today’s featured shop makes me drool. Heck, anything with the word chocolate in it gets an A in my book! So, you can only imagine how excited I am to introduce you to Chocolate Savvy. All I can say is nom, nom, nom…

The shop’s owner, Marlo, makes tasty treats that make me wish the computer came with a scratch and sniff ability. You can’t tell me that chocolate covered pretzels aren’t the greatest invention of all time. I mean, come on! I rank them right up there with the internet. :)

Confession? I’m super messy. Like, when I got engaged the first thing my mom said to me was, “umm, a white dress? You do realize you tend to make a mess.” Woops. Anyway, I am a person that totally needs a cupcake in a jar. Whenever I eat cupcakes I usually get frosting and crumbs everywhere. This will save major cleanup. Flavors are:

Triple Chocolate with Fudge and Buttercream frosting
Triple Chocolate with Rasberry filling and Buttercream frosting
Triple Chocolate with Bavarian filling and Buttercream frosting

Red Velvet with Cream Cheese and Buttercream frosting

French Vanilla with Fudge Filling and Buttercream frosting
French Vanilla with Lemon Zest Filling and Buttercream frosting

1. What is your favorite item in your shop?

Cupcakes in a jar has to be my favorite.

2. What made you want to start an Etsy shop?

I have been an Internet based business for 12 years and a friend told me about ETSY a year ago and I just love it. I love the fact that Etsy is for the Homemade stores.

My first creation was chocolate dipped Oreos and marshmallows.

Thanks Marlo!

And now, go enjoy a cupcake or two for lunch!

Etsy Monday: Idea Chic

by Megan on April 23rd, 2012

The other day I was scrounging around my house looking for some nice stationery. I couldn’t find any and was getting discouraged. That is when I realized that every girl needs some! Today’s featured Etsy shop, Idea Chic, has exactly that, plus more!

I want one of everything from this shop, which is extremely difficult, as I am trying super hard not to go on major shopping sprees, but with most of the items $30 and under, I can totally stock up without feeling guilty. Here are some of my faves!

Idea Chic

Peony Letterpress Stationery

Love is Brewing Tea Bags

I know these aren’t stationery, but I totally had to feature them. How DARLING?! “Choose from Passion Fruit, English Breakfast or Green Tea. Each favor is made of loose tea packaged in a muslin tea bag with a tag and ribbon for a finishing touch. The tea is brewed directly in the bag, enough to make around one pot.” Love!

My husband deploys every other year and I always try to send him love notes or letters every chance I get. When he is deployed, he always wants activity type of books, such as crosswords, puzzles etc. Why not send him this and combine both a love note and an activity! Brilliant!

And, in typical Etsy Monday fashion, Jenelle was kind enough to answer some questions. Enjoy!

1. How did you come up with your shop’s name?

I spent countless hours brainstorming, researching, comparing, nit picking, and scribbling out possible names. I grilled family, friends, and even complete strangers looking for a grain of inspiration. I wanted a name that you saw & wondered, “Hmmm I wonder what that’s all about- sounds fun & interesting!” I wanted it to be catchy and easy to remember. I wanted to elude to what is going on, recycling/re-purposing clothes. I thought about it until I couldn’t think anymore. Then turned on the radio. AC/DC came out of the stereo full blast singing “TNT” and it hit me! TNT. I liked that, but what would it stand for? Trash N2 Tees. When I first opened shop, I was known as TNT: TrashN2Tees.

2. What has been the most awesome thing you’ve upcycled?

Oh man, this is a tough one. Of course I upcycle clothing- but I reuse or “upcycle” items on a daily basis. Probably sounds kind of mundane, but we hung an old tractor tire from a tree in my back yard & my boys think that is the awesome thing ever. I cherish the afternoons & memories we’re creating. I think the coolest thing would be the bunk beds my husband Nick and I designed and built using scrap metal.

3. What is your favorite item in your shop?

The monster truck design was the whole thing that started this journey, it will always have a special place in my heart. Most of the items in my shop have a personal connection or story behind them.

4. Where do you get your inspiration?

I find inspiration & drive for TrashN2Tees, through connections I make with people all over the world. I love that not only am I expressing myself creatively, but TNT offers me a platform to educate others about the importance of clothing recycling. (You can find out more on my blog). Design inspiration comes from things that are directly around me most often, my family & the ongoings of my life. For instance, the BMX bike- was a design dedicated to my husband who rides!
