Telegraph UK: Shopping Makes People Very, Very Happy

by Lisa on September 20th, 2010

The Telegraph UK published an interesting story recently, which I’ve been meaning to share here with all of you bargain shoppers.

The Institute of Promotion Marketing has released early results of a study that shows that people that score great shopping bargains experience an incredible emotional high.

What do you think?  True?

I am definitely inclined to agree – sometimes bargain shopping will put a smile on my face for days, especially when I know I’ve found an incredible deal or have worked {using coupons and whatnot} to make something an incredible deal.

The Telegraph article notes that they’re having a hard time pinning down why people don’t continue to buy after a sale ends.  This seems like a no-brainer to me.  Why pay full price for something when you can get it on sale?!

Article: Online Sample Sale Site Ideeli Raises A Whopping $20 Million

by Lisa on December 9th, 2009

2009 has really been the year of the online sample sale, don’t you think? New sites are popping up constantly, though I definitely have my favorites: Rue La La, Ideeli, One Kings Lane, and Gilt are at the forefront of the list for me.

All four of those sites have one major thing in common, too – over the past couple of months they’ve all managed to secure MAJOR funding, meaning these sites aren’t going anywhere and are only going to continue to grow.

This article from TechCrunch is pretty interesting, and even reveals that Amazon recently bought the rights to their own online sample sale site.

CNN Article "Dirty Secrets of Black Friday"

by Lisa on November 23rd, 2009

Black Friday is rapidly approaching and I’m sure at least a few of you will be braving the stores in pursuit of the best discounts of the holiday season.  I found this super interesting article, “Dirty Secrets of Black Friday ‘Doorbusters’” on CNN and thought I’d share it here with all of you.  Click here for the full article.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • “How can you be the size of a retailer like Sears and only get a minimum of five per store, yet devote big space in your circular to advertise that deal? … “We saw the stampede at a Wal-Mart store in New York last year on Black Friday that led to an employee’s death,” said Burt Flickinger, managing director of consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. “The stampede happened because so many of the deals were advertised as limited supply.”
  • Some of the holiday electronics with those low sale prices are derivatives, models that have a few less features than a standard model in that product line, said Dworsky.
  • “Many retailers will say that their Black Friday deals are available online,” said Dworsky. “But they’re not nice enough to tell you which ones.”
  • “Since retailers don’t have a live inventory online you run the risk of getting an e-mail weeks later that your order had been delayed or worse, cancelled, because the product is out of stock,” he said.

What do you all think about Black Friday shopping?  Do you plan to be out there braving the lines? Or are you going to wait for the Cyber Monday deals?
