Holiday Shopping Challenge: Purchasing Gifts Using American Express Membership Rewards Points

by Lisa on December 13th, 2011

Two years ago I didn’t know anything about American Express. I knew they were a credit card company, and that was about it. Since I worked with them on the Zync Card and now have my own Amex, I really enjoy everything that American Express has to offer. I swear I’m not just saying that, either.

Before I “found” American Express, I used my debit card 100% of the time. I liked my debit card because I received 4 airline miles for every dollar I spent, which is a a pretty awesome payout, especially when you’re saving up for a honeymoon on the other side of the world. Thanks to new debit card reforms that went into place this year, however, my debit card rewards program was dropped and I no longer earned anything for paying with my debit card. Thus, I was happy that I had my American Express because I do not believe in paying with something when you won’t get a reward. I know – that sounds funny – but if the rewards are there for the taking, why not earn them and use them?

Additionally, I love the protections that American Express has in place. For instance, their Fraud Protection Services are second to none. This is super important to my fiance and I, as my fiance had his identity stolen two years ago. We haven’t ever had fraudulent charges appear on our American Express statement, but it’s reassuring to know that if we did we wouldn’t be held liable for those purchases. While fraud sucks, but the partnership American Express has with Foursquare is fun! Did you know you can link your American Express card to your Foursquare account and you’ll gain access to special treats just for American Express card holders?True story. Last week I was at my favorite deli. When I went to check in on Foursquare I had a special perk waiting for me – when I made a $10 purchase at said deli I would receive a $10 account credit. I wasn’t planning on spending $10, but I did because basically that became a free purchase!

If you couldn’t tell, I’m a little fan girl-ish about American Express. So let’s get to the shopping.

While I have quite a few American Express Membership Rewards Points saved up in my account, American Express generously gave me an additional 40,000 points to complete my Holiday Shopping Challenge. In the last post I showed you how I utilized daily deal sites, sample sale sites, coupons, and cash back shopping to score some amazing deals for those people on my gift-buying list. I actually finished the majority of my shopping last week when I wrote that post, so with my American Express Membership Rewards Points I decided to add a couple of extra special gifts.

Of course, I was geeked when I logged into my American Express account and saw this little message:

20% off gifts when you purchase them using American Express Membership Rewards Points? I’ll take it!

Keurig Mini

My fiance is an avid coffee drinker, yet he works in an office that doesn’t provide coffee. Each day he treks out to Starbucks or Caribou – twice – to get his coffee fill. This is driving me a little bit crazy because the cost of two coffee drinks each day really adds up quickly! Normally this Keurig Mini-Brewer costs $99.99, or 20,766 Membership Rewards Points, but thanks to the 20% offer I got mine for 16,621 points.

My fiance is going to be excited when he opens this one. I’ve kind of hinted about getting him a Keurig and he said that was something he’d really like, but that was months ago so I’m sure he has forgotten about it by now.

UGG Australia Women's Coquette Slipper

Some people – like me – love shoes. My mother loves slippers. One of the first things I ever remember her raving about, in fact, was a pair of slippers. I’ve gotten her fake UGGs in the past, but decided to put my points toward getting her the real deal. Normally these UGG Australia Women’s Coquette Slippers sell for $99.99 or 19,998 Membership Rewards Points. Since the handy dandy 20% off sale is going on now, I was able to score these for 15,998 points!

SEPHORA by OPI GLEE 6 Piece Mini Kit GleeMy sister loves nail polish, Sephora, and Glee, so when I saw this set was available I had to pick it up for her. I was actually eyeing this SEPHORA by OPI GLEE 6 Piece Mini Kit at Sephora when I was there last week because I know so many people that would love it. It sells for $24, or you can normally get it for 5,990 Membership Rewards Points. Thanks to the 20% off I snagged it for 4,792.

MoneyballFinally, I decided to add one more gift recipient to my list. The original goal was to only shop for five people, but since I’d gotten my original 5 quite a bit already I decided to add my future Father-in-Law to the mix. He is notoriously hard to shop for because he doesn’t ask for anything. Ever. His one true love is baseball so I decided to get him a copy of Michael Lewis’ Moneyball. He hasn’t read it yet, so I’m sure he’s going to love it. (If the movie were out already I’d package them both together.) The book normally costs $9.28, or 2,654 points. Thanks to the discount I got this book for just 2,123 points, which hardly seems like anything at all!

Total Points Spent: 39,594

That’s some pretty good shopping, I think. You know, what I love about shopping while using points is that it feels like it’s free shopping, even when American Express isn’t giving me points to use. Since you accumulate points anytime you use your American Express card, the points are just sitting there waiting for you.

To recap, I purchased 14 gifts using my $250 budget, and added on additional 4 gifts today using my 40,000 Membership Rewards Points. Merry Christmas, indeed.

Reminder: Today is the LAST DAY to enter our Holiday Shopping Challenge and win a $250 American Express Gift Card. Click here to enter the giveaway now. The winner will be announced tomorrow.

Disclosure: American Express provided me with a $250 American Express Gift Card and 40,000 Membership Rewards Points to complete my holiday shopping challenge. However fan girl-ish I may be, all opinions expressed above are my own.

New ZYNC Card From American Express Officially Launches Today!

by Lisa on May 4th, 2010

ZYNC Logo

As you may remember, back in March I was invited to New York City for an immersion event to learn all about American Express’ new charge card geared toward people in their 20s and 30s called the ZYNC Card.  ZYNC has been in beta testing since December, but as of today the card has been officially released!

ZYNC is unique in that you can build the card to fit your lifestyle.  When you sign up for the card you can also sign up for “packs,” which give you additional benefits.  You choose the benefits, or packs, that will best fit your lifestyle.  With today’s release there are a whole bunch of new benefits that I had no idea were going to be included until I saw the press release.  As I’m already a ZYNC card holder, the packs I know I’ll be using include:

  • The Style Pack offers 2X Membership Rewards points at department stores, enhanced return protection, a special collaboration with online sample sale site Gilt with benefits including a one time $25 account credit, quarterly access to private sales, and shipping promotions on select sales.
  • The Go Pack offers 2X Membership Rewards points on airfare ticket purchases, lost $20 wallet protection, and travel discounts.
  • The Restaurant Pack offers 2X Membership Rewards points at select restaurants plus special dining offers from Cold Stone Creamery®, Dunkin’ Donuts, Seasons 52, Morton’s The Steakhouse, Lettuce Entertain You and Patina Restaurant Group.
  • The Give Back Pack offers 1,000 Membership Rewards(R) points for each logged hour of volunteer service, plus one Membership Rewards point for every charitable dollar donated using your American Express Card.

Most packs will cost $25 per year, but I know at least one pack, The Eco Pack, is free.  I’m really freaking excited about the collaboration the Style Pack has with Gilt.  The $25 Gilt credit offsets at least one year of owning the $25 pack, which is awesome.  There are so many different options available with this card and I’m excited to see how it all unfolds.

To kick off the launch of the card American Express will be hosting a live concert with The National on May 15, 2010.  The concert will be streamed online for free. For more information about the concert check out ZYNC’s Facebook Page.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see ZYNC creeping up all over the place.  Even this morning when I was checking out Dunkin’ Donuts Perks I unwittingly found a special section for ZYNC card holders {and I swear I had NO idea it would be there}.

Dunkin' Donuts Zync Card

When you spend $25 in a month at Dunkin’ Donuts and use your ZYNC card you’ll receive a $5 Dunkin’ Donuts Card.

I think the most important thing to remember is that ZYNC is a charge card, so it would more take the place of a debit card.  With the ZYNC Card you do not have a revolving line of credit.  You make purchases each month and then pay them off each month.  Click here to read more about Charge Cards vs. Credit Cards.

Or, click here to learn more about ZYNC from the American Express website.

I’m curious – would you ever be interested in a card like ZYNC?

American Express Zync Card: Charge Card vs. Credit Card

by Lisa on April 1st, 2010

Amex Zync Card

Before going to the American Express Zync Card event in New York, I hadn’t given much thought to credit cards.  I have a few of them and I’m working hard to pay them off.  The ones I have all earn me one thing that I love: Airline Miles.  If I can’t get miles with the card then I don’t want the card.

Upon learning about the new American Express Zync Card my boyfriend and I signed up for a joint account.  {Full Disclosure: It was required to be a part of this evaluation program.  Without the card it would be impossible to provide Amex with any tangible feedback.}  Getting a joint card is something we had been wanting to do to cover our joint expenses, such as the earlier mentioned puppy named Bacon.  Previously, my boyfriend would cover some purchases and I would, of course, pay him back later.  {Ha! April Fools!}  He would do the same for me.  Now with the joint card we can each pay expenses and then split the bill evenly at the end of the month.  So while we obtained Zync cards with this plan in mind, we didn’t realize that this is exactly how a Zync Card should be used.

Here’s the number one thing I learned in NYC: There is a difference between a Credit Card and a Charge Card.  The Zync Card is a charge card, meaning you use it to make your purchases throughout the month and then you pay the balance in full at the end of the month.  There is no pre-set spending limit.*  As I’m sure all of you know, a credit card has a revolving line of credit that has a pre-set spending limit.  You do not have to pay it off each month, but then you will accrue interest fees and have to pay those off as well.  Most of the big companies, such as Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, only offer credit cards.  I believe American Express and Diners Club are the two main charge card companies.

I really had no idea that there was a difference between the concept of charge and credit and I’m happy to say my boyfriend didn’t either.  {I hate when he knows things that I don’t.}  Truthfully, we were both puzzled when we received our cards in the mail and found no pre-set spending limit.  I don’t think we are dumb people but these concepts had never been explained to us before.  My guess is that there are other people like us out there – people that use the terms “Charge” and “Credit” as though they’re one and the same.  Even though we didn’t really know that we were getting a charge card, I am glad that we did because we certainly don’t need to be paying interest on things like dog food, you know?

Credit card companies make the bulk of their money on the interest you pay on your month to month balance.  {Unless, of course, you’re a good consumer and pay off your balance each month.}  Because charge card companies do not make money on interest, they make money in other places, such as fees.  It costs money to be an American Express Zync Card holder, $25 per year, to be exact.  An extra card on the same account costs an additional $15 per year.

One of the main features of the Zync Card is that you can sign up for “packs,” most of which cost $20, and for which you can earn extra points on specific purchases or discounts on certain items.  Here are the current pack offerings:

  • Go Pack, which deals with travel and offers car rental discounts and double points on airfare purchases – Cost $20
  • Connect Pack, which deals with cell phones and cable bills – Cost $20
  • Eco Pack, which deals with green initiatives – Cost $0
  • Social Pack, which is great for people that enjoy eating out and going to concerts – Cost $20

What you get in exchange for the fees you pay to American Express are some pretty remarkable benefits.  These benefits are available to all card holders and are not exclusive to the Zync card.  For instance:

  • If you buy an item on Final Sale and then decide you don’t like it or can’t use it, you know the store won’t take it back.  Guess what?  American Express will take the item and refund your purchase price.  {I swear, when they told us this I was stunned.  How could I, a final sale fiend, not have known this before?!}
  • If you buy a new pair of pants and then spill something on them the next day thereby wrecking the pants, you can call American Express and they will take the back and refund you the purchase price.

These are many more benefits but I think these are the two that affect my life the most.  Paying fees to own a charge card is annoying, but perks like this make it a little more palatable, in my opinion.

Finally, you earn points for every purchase.  Those points can be redeemed for gifts, gift cards, airline miles, etc.  All the usual point reward options.

I am not encouraging you all to go out and sign-up for American Express or the Zync Card.  What I do think is important is knowing that there’s a difference between charge cards and credit cards.  In my opinion, a charge card replaces the use of a debit card.  If you use a debit card that doesn’t have good rewards, or any rewards at all, then you might consider a charge card.  In this day and age when you can earn points or rewards for doing anything with a plastic card, there’s no excuse to have an account where you’re not earning something.

*The company can cut you off, however, if you try to do something crazy like go out and purchase a yacht on a $25k a year income.

Amex Zync Immersion Event: The Fun

by Lisa on March 30th, 2010

I am not a control freak in everyday life but I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to traveling.  I don’t necessarily plan out every last stop, but I have the basics down.  Leading up to American Express Zync Card Immersion Event was a bit torturous for me because aside from my flight and eventually the hotel, I had no idea what we’d be doing for two days.  In fact, the people in charge didn’t give us any clue what we’d be doing until we got to the next destination.  It was a day and a half of secrets.  But oh, were they good!

Before the fun could begin, I checked into the super stylish Standard Hotel.  I’ve never stayed in such a place.  It was honestly the most comfortable hotel bed in which I’ve ever slept.  I didn’t want to get out of bed in the mornings!  Here’s a word of warning – don’t stay at the Standard with coworkers or anyone other than really, really close friends or lovers.  Here’s why:

Standard Hotel

This is my room.  The bed is right next to the shower and the only thing separating the two is a wall of glass.  There is no curtain!  Luckily there’s a door around the toilet, but still, this room has the potential to make for some awkward situations.  Aside from that I loved the hotel and I was particularly fond of the view from my window:

NYC Skyline

Our first group event was on Tuesday night.  We headed to Cooking by the Book, which ended up being awesome despite my lack of culinary talents.  {Fun Fact: Cooking by the Book is the test kitchen for uber-cookbook Joy of Cooking!}

Cooking by the Book NYC #amexzync

This is my cooking group.  {I’m the one on the far left.}  We were in charge of the gnocchi portion of dinner and oh my was it ever tasty!  This experience was definitely a fun way to meet the people who, until that day, were strangers to me.  It wasn’t just the bloggers that participated in these event either.  Standing next to me is Mary, who is a VP at American Express.  Other stations had other Amex employees, as well as Ogilvy PR wonder workers.

The next morning, Wednesday, started off with a brainstorming session and learning all about American Express.  One thing I loved?  We were able to touch one of the actual famed American Express Black {Centurion} Cards!  Did you know that baby is made out of titanium?  Fancy!  {Oops.  They said nobody’s allowed to talk about the card.  Hope I didn’t give anything away by saying it’s black and made of Titanium.}

After a working lunch we headed out to do perhaps one of the neatest things ever: DJ School!  We headed to Scratch DJ Academy, which was founded by Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC, and were told this was where we were going to meet our secret “special guest.”   However, when we were warned that we weren’t allowed to ask any personal questions of said female special guest, one of my fellow bloggers astutely guessed that we would be meeting none other than Samantha Ronson.

Before that happened, however, we were taught a few things about DJ’ing.  I’m not a club-goer so I had no appreciation for this craft before taking the class.  Now though – I don’t know how they do it!  DJing is tough as you always have to be listening to the music and thinking about what to do next.  We were learning how to scratch, which is really really hard!  You have to use both hands to do two different things all while listening to the beat.  Brain overload!  As I tweeted, my new name is obviously DJ Jazzy Lisa.

Lisa Koivu, DJ, Amez ZyncPhoto by Matt Rainey for American Express

After we had a few basic lessons it was time for Samantha Ronson to show us how it’s done.  It seems as though there might be a few different kinds of DJs?  They didn’t get into that but we were learning how to “scratch.”  You know – scratch the record so that it sounds really cool.  Samantha, on the other hand, told us that she doesn’t scratch so much as she mixes the songs.

I took this short video of her playing one of my favorite songs, Party in the U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus.  I’d just like to note that I can’t actually stand Miley Cyrus and absolutely do not listen to her music as a general rule, but this song is just so dang catchy.  The way Samantha spins it so that it goes right into a Jay-Z song {I think?} right at the Jay-Z party is all kinds of cool.

Finally, the event ended at very awesome bar Macao where we went to “mixology school.” Mixology school is in quotes because I didn’t actually try my hand at making anything. I just drank. I definitely have a new appreciation for well-made drinks. When they’re made properly you can’t taste the alcohol. I guess that’s both a good and bad thing.

All in all it was a really awesome event and I’m so glad I was able to go.  Thanks for indulging me this post, which is in no way related to bargain shopping.  Tomorrow I’ll tell you all the things I learned about the Zync Card and American Express in general.

Amex Zync Immersion Event: Introduction

by Lisa on March 29th, 2010

Amex Zync Card

When I was contacted by American Express about the new Zync Charge Card I was asked to make a multiple-month commitment to provide them with feedback on what 20- and 30-somethings would think were positive qualities in a charge card.  The first part of this commitment was attending a two-day immersion event in New York City where we would get to learn about the Zync Card, provide feedback, and experience a few different events unique to New York City.  One of the biggest perks of the Zync Card is that you can create the card to be whatever you want it to be to best suit your lifestyle, and thus parlay being an amex holder into trying out different experiences.  If you follow me on Twitter then you already know what awesome events we enjoyed; if you don’t follow me on Twitter or missed those posts then I’ll fill you in on all the fun tomorrow.

I thought I’d spend the next couple of days telling you a little about the event as well as telling you what I learned about American Express.  Believe me – I learned one key thing that essentially changed the way I think about American Express.  {In a good way.}

To start off, I thought I’d share with you what other sites are involved in this initiative.  As I told you all before, I had no idea what other sites/ people would be involved before I arrived.  When I received the list my jaw dropped – there were some heavy hitters!  Sites much bigger than Fantabulously Frugal.  I have no idea how I was chosen to be included among such great sites but I’m certainly not complaining!  The few days in NYC were a great learning experience and it was fun to learn about the origins of other sites and see that whether the blog is large or small, we all have similar concerns and anxieties.

The other websites involved:

A New Mode – Fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blog aimed at women

Artlog – NYC-based blog focused on art, theatre, dance, and culture

CoolHunting – A personal catalog and reference tool featuring really cool objects

Eco-Chick – Eco-friendly fashion and lifestyles

Ecorazzi – The latest in green gossip

Fancy Fast Food – They take fast food and make it look good

Flavorpill – Arts, entertainment, and lifestyle events happening in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, and London

Go Green Travel Green – Eco-friendly travel tips, reviews, and news

Green LA Girl – Eco-friendly and sustainable living in Los Angeles

Refinery 29 – The newest and best in style, shopping, and emerging trends

Thrillist – The best in food, drinks, services, gadgets, etc. in many cities

Urban Daddy – Covers the latest in restaurants, nightlife, leisure, fashion, and travel

Wise Bread – Live large on a small budget

Tomorrow: Fun and new experiences in my favorite city!
