While I don’t normally share too many deals that are for college students only, I’m sharing this one because it’s something I desperately wish had been around when I was in college because it could have saved me hundreds in parking tickets.
Zipcar University has just launched, which is just as it sounds – Zipcar memberships for college students, with cars located on college campuses across the country. Thanks to this launch there’s little need for students to have their own cars on college campuses, which is pretty amazing. I had my car on campus so that I could drive a group of people each week to Meijer to stock up on groceries. It also came in handy every Wednesday afternoon when me and two girlfriends would catch a matinee at the local movie theatre. Aside from that, my car stayed parked and occasionally accumulated parking tickets. Yuck.
With Zipcar University, insurance is covered in the cost of renting a car, as is gas. The fees appear to vary based on the location of your university, but the way Zipcar works is you pay a one-time application fee of $25 and a yearly membership fee of $50 once you’re approved. Then, you pay for however long you’ll be using a car. I just checked the rates in Ann Arbor and the rates are $7.50 per hour, or $69 per day. (Again, gas and insurance is included in that, so this is all you’ll pay.) Let’s say that four of you want to take a two hour trip to the mall. You’d pay $15 total, or $3.75 per person, which isn’t bad at all! You pick up and return the Zipcar to any Zipcar-designated parking spots on your college campus.
If you register now, Zipcar is offering $10 off your first year membership fee, so you’ll pay $40 instead of $50.
