I have to admit that Amazon has come out with kind of a genius idea: a cheaper Kindle – you can now get a Wi-Fi version for as little as $114 – but this one will come complete with ads, hence the cheaper price. They’re calling it a “Kindle with Special Offers,” and it’s down from their other inexpensive model without ads that sells for $139.
Here is what you’ll get with the new book reading device, which is otherwise identical to the $139 version:
Special Offers
You’ll receive special offers. Examples include:
* $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
* $6 for 6 Audible Books (normally $68)
* $1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store (choose from over 1 million albums)
* $10 for $30 of products in the Amazon Denim Shop or Amazon Swim Shop
Sponsored Screensavers
Our goal is to display sponsored screensavers that you want to see. That’s why we’ve created a free Kindle app and website (coming soon) called AdMash. Anyone who’s interested can download AdMash and help pick future screensavers. Two prospective screensavers show up side-by-side, and you pick the one you find most attractive. The ones preferred most by customers qualify to become sponsored screensavers.
So what do you think? Would you use a sponsored Kindle in an effort to save $25? We’re normally pretty keen on saving a buck any way possible, and while I concede that Amazon’s idea is a good one {for them, in a business sense}, I’m not sure it’s for me. I would want to see that the “special offers” would be somewhat frequent – or at least as frequent as the screen saver ads would be.
