31 Days of Giveaways

Today’s giveaway is for an advance copy of the not-yet-released book Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose, written by Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos.

Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh

I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of Delivering Happiness, and let me tell you – I LOVED it!  Tony Hsieh writes in an amazingly relatable manner about his graduation from Harvard and then his development of multiple companies, which eventually led him to oversee the formation of Zappos, the online shoe store we all know and love.  At the beginning of the book there’s a note that the book may not be written in a perfectly scholarly manner, which I loved.  This book is not in any way preachy.  The book is also hilarious.  I was reading it on a plane and on multiple occasions I laughed out loud, causing people to give me strange looks. Delivering Happiness is a concise history of how Tony Hsieh helped Zappos to become the shoe powerhouse it is today.

I am very interested in how small businesses work, and this book serves as a behind-the-scenes reader for how to make a company work.  I’ll admit that before reading Delivering Happiness that I knew very little about Zappos.  I especially didn’t know that the most important part of the Zappos culture is customer service.  They feel they’re doing their job not when they make record profits, but instead when they make customers happy.  If you order from Zappos then you know that they frequently upgrade their shipping to overnight shipping, which is just one way they strive to have a superior customer experience and make their customers happy, hence the title, “Delivering Happiness.”

Life at the Zappos headquarters in Las Vegas sounds absolutely kick-a$$.  The company works just as hard at finding quality employees and keeping them happy as they do at keeping their customers happy.  In fact, when the company made the fairly big move from San Francisco to Las Vegas back when the company was much smaller, most of their employees decided to make the move with the company.

After reading the book it seems as though most of what happens at Zappos is an open book.  I’m headed to Vegas in a month and I’ve already booked a tour of Zappos Headquarters.  {Yes!  They give free tours!}  I didn’t know anything about the tour before reading the book, but now I want to know all I can about Zappos.  {I feel a little bit like a fan boy.}  I can’t wait to learn a little bit more about Zappos – and yes, my new interest in Zappos is one hundred percent related to Delivering Happiness.  {While I was given a free book, I assure you that all opinions here are 100% my own.  This is a great read!}

If you want to become a fan boy, too, and for free, enter this giveaway!
