Giveaway Day 27: Spent: Memoirs of a Shopping Addict – Closed

31 Days of Giveaways

The winner of today’s giveaway will win a copy of the new book Spent: Memoirs of a Shopping Addict by Avis Cardella.

Spent: Memoirs of a Shopping Addict

As a child, Avis Cardella devoured the glamorous images in her mother’s fashion magazines.  She grew up to be one of the people in them, living a life that seemed to be filled with labels and luxury.  But shopping had become a dangerous addiction.  She forwent food for Prada.  Credit card debt blossomed like the ever-increasing pile of unworn shoes and clothing in the back of her closet.  She defined herself by the things she owned and also lost herself in the mad hunt for the perfect pair of pants or purse that might make her feel whole.  Spent is Avis Cardella’s timely, deeply personal, and shockingly dramatic exploration of our cultural need to spend, and of what happens when someone is consumed by the desire to consume.

I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of the book and I expected to love it.  Sadly, this was not the case.  Sometimes the book felt far more clinical than I was expecting, perhaps due to Cardella’s often formal writing style.  Maybe she’s not asking for sympathy, but the formal writing style made it difficult to sympathize with Cardella over her shopping addiction – I just didn’t feel like I could relate to her story much at all.  Putting that aside, however, Spent does serve as a good precautionary tale on overspending and shopping to fill a void.

I need a new book to read for summer travels- this would be great!

Sounds like a good book and I'd love to add it to my summer reading list!

i love any book recommendations by you!

I think it sounds really interesting and I always love reading books!

I think it would be interesting to get into the mind of someone who has processed why they shop too much--because I don't have the guts to look into my own! LOL! :-)

It sounds a lot like Confessions of a Shopaholic, but more real-worldly. I liked the Shopaholic books and the movie as well, although it was not what I was expecting. I'd like to know how this book is different and how a person who actually experienced it tells the story.

i love memoirs and I could be possibly also be a shopaholic myself!

It would give me insight into what is going on in the world.

I love non-fiction books because there's not many good ones out there. This sounds like the real life version of Confessions of a Shopaholic.

I actually requested that my library buy this book recently. They haven't yet. I LOVE reading memoirs about anything and,of course, I love to shop.

It sounds like an interesting read. I love books that tell the tale of an everyday person's life, makes me feel like I'm a peeping tom but minus the creepiness factor.

I am actually intrigued by the fact that you say it did not live up to your expectations. It sounds like an interesting cautionary tale, and for that reason I would like to read it.

I think I would really enjoy this book. I might not be a shopping "addict," but have definitely had my shopping-binge moments; this book sounds like a good reminder that it's important not to define your self-worth by what you own or what you can buy. I also like academic-type analysis of consumer culture, which it sounds like this book might delve into.
I would be so excited if I won!

Because I am a shopaholic! I also love fun books.
