Today’s giveaway is for an autographed copy of the new novel The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott by Kelly O’Connor McNees!

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott

Here’s a little bit about the book from McNees’ website:

Millions of readers across generations have laughed and cried with the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women. And there has never been a more beloved heroine in the history of American letters than Jo March, Louisa’s alter ego and an iconic figure of independent spirit and big dreams. But as Louisa knew all too well, big dreams often come at a cost.

In her debut novel, The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott, Kelly O’Connor McNees deftly mixes fact and fiction as she imagines a summer lost to history, carefully purged from Louisa’s letters and journals, a summer that would change the course of Louisa’s writing career—and inspire the story of love and heartbreak between Jo and Teddy “Laurie” Laurence, Jo’s devoted neighbor and kindred spirit.

In the summer of 1855, Walt Whitman’s controversial Leaves of Grass has just been released, and the notion of making a living as a writer is still a far-off dream for Louisa. She is twenty-two years old, vivacious, and bursting with a desire to be free of her family and societal constraints so she can do what she loves the most—write. The Alcott family, destitute, as usual, moves to a generous uncle’s empty house in Walpole, New Hampshire, for the summer. Here, a striking but pensive Louisa meets the fictional Joseph Singer. Louisa is initially unimpressed by Joseph’s charms. But just as Louisa begins to open her heart, she learns that Joseph may not be free to give his away. Their newfound love carries a steep price, and Louisa fears she may pay with the independence she has fought so hard to protect.

I am in the middle of this book and I absolutely adore it.  {I tried finishing it before today but didn’t want to rush my way through – I am enjoying it far too much!}  McNees’ writing paints such a vivid picture of Louisa May Alcott’s youth and her relationship with her sisters and family.  I can’t say that I knew anything about Alcott before I started the book, but I feel like I have a better understanding of the author.

But – don’t take my world for it.  Check out this wonderful review from The Washington Post:

McNees gets the period details just right: the crinolines and carriages; the spare, aesthetic plainness of 19th-century New England. And although the love affair with Joseph is invented, she remains faithful to the broad outlines of Alcott’s biography. In fact, “The Lost Summer” is the kind of romantic tale to which Alcott herself was partial, one in which love is important but not a solution to life’s difficulties. Devotees of “Little Women” will flock to this story with pleasure.

my favorite character was always jo. she's so full of life and love but i too always wanted her to end up with laurie!

oh, this sounds so neat! i'm on a huge reading binge right now and this would fit into my pile nicely.

My favorite character is by far Jo. I adored her when I first read the book because I was going through a tomboy phase. She was everything I wanted to be! I still think she should have ended up with Laurie...

I would love to win this book! This summer will be my first without grad school classes and/or a summer job, so I will be doing a lot of reading--this book would be perfect!

I always thought I was a Jo growing up, but the older I get the more I become like my mom... a true Meg.

Ah, Little Women was my favorite book as a young women, having grown up in a house full of girls. I would love to delve into this innocent world.

I would love to receive this book because it sounds really good! And I loved Little Women. I would also like to share it with my sister who I know would love it too!

I would love to read this book. I loved this book as a girl and it brought my mom and I closer because she loved it as well. We agreed that when I have children they will call my mother Marmee from the book.

I'm always looking for good books to read and absolutely LOVED Little Women when I was younger - I had a very old copy that was my Mom's when she was a kid.

This is not only a wonder book, but one which passes the test of the ages; Ms. Alcott not only was adept at turning a phase, but she made life ever so simplistic and centered; I loved reading her works as a young high school senior and returned back during later years to feel the warmth of an old "friend"; I don't care if I get this item, I just wanted to express this statement concerning this wonderful author.

I am a historical biography/fiction junkie and have been a huge "Little Women" fan since I was a kid. I have also read the two sequels, but "Little Women" is undoubtedly the best of the three. I also the movie version from the 1990s with Winona Ryder (before her shoplifting days).

I know, I know. So many people have already chosen Jo, but I'm going to have to choose her as well. She had such a great energy and spirit, how could you not choose her?

I've heard great things about the book and would love to have a great summer read!

I always wanted to be Jo when I was reading Little Women, but I was much more like Meg.

I'd like to read The Lost Summer Of Louisa May Alcott because she was one of my favorite authors growing up. Little Women was my first classic novel that I read.

My favorite is Beth. Shy, quiet, nurturing reminds me of myself at a young age.

I would love to win the book. I love to escape everyday life with a great read, and this sounds like one.

My grown daughter used to read sooo much, that on occasion, we had to threaten to take away her books. She'd love this book, and I'd love to win it to present to her! What a lovely give away. Thanks

Hands down, favorite character is Jo. So spunky!

I just finished my thesis and am finding the joy again of getting lost in a book. This story seems like the perfect way to lose myself in someone else's life!

I'm going to go against the crowd here and say Meg was my favorite character. Jo's strong-headedness actually got on my nerves a bit (though I still loved her)

Why would I like to have this book? What can I say. I'm a book-a-holic. And I have such great memories of Little Women (and Little Men, the sequel) from when I was a little girl (whose parents had to limit me to 2 hours of reading a day to force me to ever do anything else).

fave character was Jo, hands down. my mom gave me a beautiful hardcover set of LMA's books when I was in middle school and I remember reading them fondly. This would be a great follow up to ponder the what ifs of the series

Hmm, I really would have liked Jo as a friend but wanted to be like Amy...she was sort of the Cinderella of the story.

I love Louisa May Alcott's books...I think I read them all. I really enjoy reading books that combine history and fiction so this book sounds super fun.

Jo was my favorite because of her strength!

I loved reading these books as a teenager so would love to read this new book

I always identified with Jo because I considered myself strong and independent.

I would love to win this book so that I have something to read during all the trips I have to take this year!

Jo is my favorite character as well; it's always broken my heart that Amy married Laurie instead of her!

I would love to win this book!

I know most are going to say Jo is the character they admire or like most so I am adding my name to that mix.

I have read Little Women at least a dozen times since I first read it in grade school. I love the book and would love to read this book as an add on to it.

I really loved both Meg and Jo...but all of the characters were great!

I would love to win a copy of this book! It sounds like a great summer read!

I would love to read this book because it sounds like a great summer read and I have heard great things about it!

My favorite character was of course Jo - impulsive and strong. She was someone I related to growing up!

Amy March--I love her personal growth throughout the novel!

My grandmother introduced me to Little Women almost 20 years ago, her 95th birthday is comming up and this would be the PERFECT gift, I know she'd love it!

I loved little women. My college roommate introduced me and I was hooked.

Would have to choose Meg as the character I most identified with. Thanks again for a great reminder of some great childhood reads!

I had a 'boxed set' of LMA books when I was a girl, although they were the classier, hardcover version. Thanks for a great trip down memory lane!

It's really hard to pick my favorite character from Little Women. I mean, REALLY hard. I loved Jo because she was so impetuous, so vivacious. I loved Meg because she was so comforting, yet wanted so badly to be accepted into "society". Beth....because she was so gentle and always mothering Jo. Amy, I thought was a spoiled brat. I loved Laurie...his mischief, his willingness to help the March girls. I always was so mad that Jo turned his offer of marriage down and always wanted to write an alternate version of Little Women where Jo accepts his offer of marriage.

I absolutely adore the writings of Louisa May Alcott. As a child I devoured Little Women and have read many of her books since. She is one my favorites authors.

I always loved Jo best from Little Women. I related to her best because I was a tomboy when I was young. She was also tenacious and I always wanted to be like her!

I would love to win this book--it seems like a fantastic way to escape into fiction about what might have inspired the author of Little Women . I just know this is a book you must pass along to others too. My Mom and sister love books like this!

My favorite Little Women character is Meg because she is so much like me.

Louisa May Alcott is such a wonderful author! I love it when authors combine fact with fiction and offer a what-if.
