Etsy Monday: Yippie Designs

by Lisa on February 2nd, 2010

Etsy Monday logoIt only seems appropriate that I am posting this week’s Etsy Monday on Tuesday.  The owner of today’s Etsy shop is a reader of Fantabulously Frugal and we have been going back and forth for months on this article, and pretty much whenever I said I’d do something, I did it a few weeks late.  It’s only fitting, then, that this post is also a day late.  Chrissy, however, was awesome about my tardiness and I’m sure you’re going to love her shop as much as I do.  So please allow me to introduce you all to Yippie Designs!

First, you might be wondering what the word “Yippie” means.  Thankfully Chrissy explains that on her website {because without said explanation, I would have just thought it was a fun-sounding and very happy word} – “A Yippie is a hybrid of Yuppie and Hippie – leading to an upscale urban, yet socially conscious lifestyle. My pieces can be worn by any age to any event – with jeans and a t-shirt or to a black tie affair!”

So with that in mind, let’s look at the jewels.  {And such pretty jewels they are, too!}

I don’t think anyone would ever accuse me of loving items that are particularly girly, which is why it’s kind of a surprise to me that one of my favorite Yippie items is just as girly as can be.  I really can’t help it – this Flower Resin Choker has stolen my heart!

Another item that I wouldn’t mind having is this Pink and Silver Stretchy Watch.  What’s ironic about this choice is that I almost never wear pink and I never wear a watch.  But I’m digging this watch because it’s more like a bracelet and I LOVE those stardust beads!  They’re so flashy and so fun!

Chrissy was kind enough to answer some questions for all of you, so here’s a little bit of Chrissy in her own words:

1. How long have you been making jewelry?

I don’t know exactly but I’d say at least ten years. I really started to make more advanced pieces and designs when I worked at a craft store that had a HUGE selection of supplies. The entire process, to this day, has been experimentation and trial and error.
2. From where do you draw the inspiration for your pieces?
I really love anything sparkly and I love to play with different colors and shapes. I like to design things that are interesting and a bit different, but are still simple and sleek. I also really love making one of a kind pieces for people – making a piece that fits a client’s parameters but still has my design signature is very exciting (I take Alchemy requests on Etsy!)!

3. For your jewelry, what types of materials do you most enjoy working with?
Almost everything I make has at least a Swarovski pearl or crystal. I honestly can’t remember the last piece I made that didn’t include Swarovski crystals. They combine the color and sparkle I love in a clean, sophisticated way.

4. Do you have any one piece that you would call a favorite?
Can I have two? Is that cheating? I love this piece:

I have made it in many colors to match a client’s request. I get compliments on it every time I wear it and it has a ton of non-obnoxious sparkle.
My other favorite piece is this:

Turquoise and Pink Square Swarovski Bracelet {$50}
I love the contrast of the earthy turquoise with the bright pink crystals.

5. What type of woman do you envision wearing pieces by Yippee Designs?
Anyone! My clients have ranged in age from 6 to 65. Yippie Designs comes from the combination of the words yuppie and hippie. This name developed as I realized that’s the kind of woman I was becoming – a successful, urban woman who was also very socially conscious. As a result, I needed a look that would translate from a conservative look at a meeting with a client (I work at an engineering firm as my day job), to jeans and a tee at the grocery store, to a night out with my fiance.

6. New Random Question: What’s your favorite color?
Are you kidding me? This is pretty much the hardest question ever – how can you just pick one? I guess I’d have to say jewel tones. Think fuschia, cranberry, or any of those deep, rich greens, blues, or purples you’d see on a peacock.
7. Is there anything in particular you think people should know about Yippee Designs?
Well in order to fulfill the socially conscious part of my name, I donate a portion of my sales to a charity. From February 1-14 I will be donating 10% of each sale to with the Multiple Myeloma Research Fund.

Thanks Chrissy!  I’d like to add that while Chrissy is donating 10% of each sale to, she is donating 20% of the sale of each Love Harder Bracelet to the Multiple Myeloma Research Fund.
