Ways to Help in Haiti

by Lisa on January 14th, 2010

Some things are more important than a good deal.

Here are a few ways to help the people in Haiti.

1. Text “HAITI” to 90999 and donate $10 to the Red Cross.  This was set up by the U.S. State Department, so you know it’s legit.  The $10 donation will be added to your next cell phone bill.

2. Text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haita, a charity set up by Wyclef Jean to help those people in his home country of Haiti.

Just an FYI: There are rumors going around Twitter that you can ship packages to Haiti for free, and that American Airlines and JetBlue are sending doctors and nurses to Haiti for free.  This is NOT true.  Read the CNN article here.

However, two airlines ARE doing their part to try to get the donations to Haiti to continue.  According to Arthur Frommer, Spirit Airlines is offering anyone who makes a “tangible” donation to the Red Cross or UNICEF 5,000 free airline miles.  Here is the press release with more information about this program.

American Airlines is offering 250 airline miles to anyone that donates $50 to the Red Cross, or 500 miles for any donation over $100.  Here is more information on the American Airlines program.
