As far as I’m concerned, today’s featured Etsy Monday seller is a rock star. I randomly found Made by Hank about a year ago and have since returned to the site time and time again, primarily to look and drool.
Because the store is constantly selling out (and I mean constantly), I’m going to share with you some pics of some of the clutches/bags that designer Katie Henry has created, but sans links. What’s the point? The link will be invalid within hours when someone snatches the item up almost as soon as it goes live!
This is the front of a “tough ruffles zipper purse.” The ruffles, as well as the stitching, are signature Made by Hank.
Here’s the back of that same purse. I LOVE the houndstooth detail. In fact, absolutely no detail in a Made by Hank original is overlooked.
This bag is a little smaller. It’s a tough ruffles pencil purse in burgundy with hot pink. The back? Burgundy plaid! Le sigh.
I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I was when Katie agreed to answer a few questions for all of you (and for myself)! So please do enjoy learning more about this very talented designer.
1. When did you make your first purse/ decide this was something you wanted to do?
i started sewing about six years ago or so, when my roommate at the time inherited her grandmother’s vintage singer sewing machine and we both started experimenting. i started making bags because i rode by bicycle all of the time (i live in the city), and could never find exactly what i wanted, so i made it myself! i worked as a waitress and nanny for the next few years, but spent a great deal of time sewing on the side, mostly gifts for friends. i did not start taking my sewing and bag making more seriously until last summer, and it has been a very lucky and exciting journey ever since.
2. The ruffles make for a very unique design item – when did you first come up with this idea?
i work mainly with vintage and repurposed fabrics, and spent a great deal of time trying to figure out a fun way to use the many solid color fabrics i had in my stash. it just sort of happened. i am really into mixing patterns and textures, and just kept experimenting with different techniques, and one day it just sort of happened!
3. Do you have any plans to expand your offerings at any point, or would you like to stick with purses/clutches, etc.?
i have also been working on sewn illustrations, and have had a few shows in the past of this work. they are mostly inspired by vintage photographs, and feature people with animal heads. i would like to have a second shop to offer these and similar items, but right now, i am trying to just find the hours in the day to keep up with the madebyhank shop!
4. Are you ever surprised by just how in-demand your purses/clutches are on etsy?
every day. it just never stop blowing my mind. the internet has truly been magical for me. i have no idea how people find my little shop in the vast realm of the internet, but they do. and i am so grateful every day. it has seriously been so amazing. and i have had so much support and encouragement from the little online community of handmade that i have been lucky enough to become a small part of.
