Etsy Monday: Ink Obsession Designs

by Lisa on July 7th, 2009

I am really excited about today’s Etsy Monday. Although I should admit – this is another hybrid Etsy entry, as the seller, has both an Etsy shop and a non-Etsy store and I am going to focus on the non-Etsy store.

Ink Obsession Designs
is a site after my own heart – an online stationery store based in the Chicago area. I found Ink Obsession Designs on another website and quickly fell in love – I think you will agree the items she creates are just beautiful.

What does she create, you ask? Everything. Everything I love, that is. :)

Getting married? Ink Obsession Designs might be your shop. Owner/Designer Erin often works with brides in creating a whole array of personalized products, ranging from Save the Dates to Invitations to Table Numbers to Place Cards and more.
Personally I love this design, the Hydrangea Invite. I love the flowers and I love the playful font!

As I’m not getting married anytime soon, I spent more time checking out the lovely lovely stationery and thank-you notes. I’ve got quite a collection growing right now and I’m pretty certain I’m going to be adding some Ink Obsession Designs to the bunch.

Look at this beauty, the Honeycomb Pink Note.

Or how about this one, the Inked Plum Damask Note? So understated. So classic. So beautiful!
You want to know something crazy? Everything at Ink Obsession Designs is, dare I say it, affordable! The wedding invitation above would cost just $1.95 on its own (additional elements will obviously add to the cost.) The notecards are just $1.25 each!

Erin was kind enough to answer a few questions about her products for Fantabulously Frugal readers – and at the end of the interview you’ll even find a discount code just for Fantabulously Frugal readers!

1. When did you first start making stationery/notecards/invitations, etc.?

It’s funny…my mother just came across a bunch of cards I designed as a young child, so I guess I have been doing it forever. :) I started designing professionally, however, back in 2001 when I took a job at a well known publishing house. I worked in the school division of the company and the majority of my day was spent designing stationery and invitations for our sales reps to use as giveaways and incentives for teachers and administrators. In addition to designing, we had a full service print shop on site and whenever the print shop was busy and had too long of a lead time, I just went in the back and printed the job myself. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to learn the ins and outs of printing as well as finishing techniques for binding, cutting, gluing, laminating, etc. all of which helps me today.

2. Where do you find the inspiration for your designs?

I have to carry a note pad and pen with me wherever I go because I never know when inspiration will strike. I love antiques and oftentimes will find myself full of ideas after leaving my neighborhood antique shop. Or sometimes I will see a really great swatch of fabric and will get the urge to design. I’m inspired a lot by color. I’ll see a color that I love and know that I have to design something around it.

3. I love that you have a full-service wedding service, in that you offer invitations through table cards. Do you work with a lot of brides from start to finish?

Yes and it is one of my favorite things to do. Most of the time we’ll start with save the dates and from there work on invites, table numbers, place cards, thank you cards and more.

4. What inspired you to want to create fine paper products?
In the corporate world I couldn’t really go out of the box (although trust me, I tried!). I had to design around my company’s standards. I needed a better outlet for my creativity and one day I realized I should combine my graphic design experience with my obsession for all things ink and paper. Shortly after that, Ink Obsession Designs was born!

5. Do you have any plans to expand your offerings in any way?
Yes definitely. :) In the next couple of months I’m hoping to launch printable wedding invitations for DIY brides, as well as some other wedding related items like programs and menus. I also love letterpress and would love to offer that at some point.

And – just for Fantabulously Frugal readers, Erin is offering a 15% discount off anything purchased at Ink Obsession Designs. To take advantage of this offer enter promo code FF15 at checkout. (Offer is good through July 31, 2009 – giving you plenty of time to browse and then personalize some items!)

Erin also keeps a blog! Check it out here.
