Etsy Monday: Sarah Drake Design

by Lisa on June 15th, 2009

Before we get this week’s Etsy Monday started, I wanted to send a quick hello to all of the new readers that joined Fantabulously Frugal this past week while I was on vacation. Hello! It’s nice to meet you – please stay awhile! :)

And now let’s get on to Etsy Monday, which features a wonderful designer right out of Chicago. I featured Sarah Drake during the 31 Days of Giveaways when Tonya from Serendipity won the From Me to You Gift Set. (This set sat in my house for a few weeks and I wanted to bust into the package each and every single day. But – Sarah packages her items beautifully and I didn’t have the heart to wreck the package for the winner.) The winner of the Favorite Things Giveaway Bonanza will also receive a couple of Sarah’s absolutely beautiful letter-pressed items.

This Etsy Monday is going to cheat a little bit because while I found Sarah Drake through Etsy, her Etsy shop lead me to scope out her beautiful website: So this week’s edition of Etsy Monday will feature both the website and the Etsy shop!

Do you want to know the #1 thing I am drooling over that’s available both on the main Sarah Drake website and at the etsy shop? These Love Notes.

Can you read that? You can get it personalized to say something like “Jane loves John. John loves Jane.” Too cute. If I were getting married there is no doubt I would purchase these.

Sarah Drake offers a nice assortment of lovely notecards, such as these ones, named “Water.”

All of the notecards come wrapped as they are above – which means they are perfect for gift giving. (You know – to a friend. Or to yourself.)

Both the Etsy shop and the main website carry a wide assortment of items – gift tags, notecard sets, mini letterpress journals. And, oh yeah, Sarah also designs wedding invitations. Beautiful beautiful wedding invitations.

Because Sarah is awesome she has answered a few questions for all of you wonderful readers. And at the bottom of the interview you will find a discount code just for readers of Fantabulously Frugal to use at

1. When did you first start making stationery/notecards/invitations?

Back in 1997, I made my first wedding invitation for a friend. It was completely unlike anything I make today. We took a vintage photograph of two children, and superimposed the couple’s childhood photos onto it, replacing their faces. The card folded like a greeting card, and the invite’s “greeting” was their information. Completely whimsical and pretty different from anything I’m creating currently!

2. Where do you find the inspiration for your beautiful designs?

I find inspiration everywhere, and you can probably tell from my designs so far, much of that comes from the outdoors. Growing up in Southern California helped, because I could be outdoors year round, taking in the amazing variety of plant life. Also, I was raised in a Japanese community, so that culture is a huge influence to my designs. Lately, I’ve been obsessing over mythological animals, so we’ll see if those somehow make it into wedding invitations!

3. What inspired you to want to create fine paper products?

Good paper is an accessible luxury. Not everyone can afford to drive an amazing car, or buy the best shoes or clothes. But those who have access to the internet can purchase a lovely notecard to keep in touch with someone. When that notecard is opened, and care was put into the design, the touch of the paper and the stamp on the envelope, the recipient knows that they were considered. We offer products that keep people connected, and that’s important to me.

4. Do you have any plans to expand your offerings in any way?

We do! I’m really excited about our new collection that will include bedding, ceramic, table linens and a line for children. I will be sure to keep you posted as we introduce it (hopefully in August!)

Sarah has graciously agreed to offer readers of Fantabulously Frugal 20% off any pre-made item at Sarah Drake Design. Just enter promo code FANFRU at checkout and the 20% discount will be applied to your order.
