Fantabulously Frugal Friday: Film Metro

by Lisa on May 1st, 2009

Today is not only the start of 31 Days of Giveaways, but it is also the start of a new feature that will post every Friday, Fantabulously Frugal Friday.  (And yes, I chose Friday simply for the alliteration.)  In this feature I will post some of my favorite “frugal” websites.  The site can be about absolutely anything, as long as the goal of the site is to save us all $$$.  Like Etsy Monday, if you have any suggestions for sites, please send them my way.  Of if you would like to be a guest contributor and write about your favorite $$$ Saving Site, that would be great, too.  Just contact me!

Without further ado…

One of my all-time favorite “frugal” websites is Film Metro.

What do I love about this site, you ask? I love that you can go there and download passes to see advance screenings of movies for free! Absolutely 100% free!

According to the Film Metro website, the “rules” are simple:
1. Sign-up for a free account
2. Download movie passes
3. Enjoy free movie screenings

While I have not taken advantage of this in Chicago (tickets are harder to come by in the larger cities because they “sell” out so darn quickly), I often email passes to my parents in the Detroit suburbs. You do need to be relatively close to a big city to take advantage of most of the movie passes, although most of the screenings actually occur in the suburbs.

Here is one hint I can provide you with, should you sign up for this site and start seeing movies for free: ALWAYS get to your movie screening at least an hour ahead of time! They ALWAYS over-book the theatre, knowing that some people will not show up. If too many people show up, you will just be sent home. So, in order to make sure you are able to see the film—Show Up Early. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If you live near one of these cities, you should definitely check out Film Metro…you never know, something just might be screening near you (and like I said, though cities are listed, the screenings are often in the suburbs)!
