Chicago Friends: After-Words Charity Book Sale

by Lisa on May 1st, 2009

I know that people love coming to Chicago for the shopping, but want to know a secret from a gal that’s lived here for over 5 years? I NEVER shop downtown. There are good stores, yes, and a good atmosphere, but did you know that in downtown Chicago you pay over 10% sales tax on every purchase?! Boo. (By comparison, in NYC clothing and shoe purchases totaling less than $110 are tax free!)

As a result of the sales tax issues here, I think Chicago has got to top the scales as one of, if not the most expensive place to shop in the country.

So, it’s hard to find a deal that catches my attention enough that it makes me want to wander downtown and pay that awful sales tax.

But…on May 2 and May 3, 2009 one of my favorite used book stores, after-words (23 E. Illinois, Chicago, IL), is having a charity book sale. People can get a bag full of books for just $5! (Bags cost an extra $1, so I recommend bringing your own.) The sale will go from noon until 6 p.m. each day.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which distributes food to over 600 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters each year.
