Your Thoughts: Bag Borrow or Steal (Avelle)

by Lisa on April 20th, 2009
I’m dying to hear – what are your thoughts on Avelle (formerly Bag Borrow or Steal)? Avelle is a service that lets you lease designer handbags.

If you aren’t familiar with this service, but you are familiar with the Sex and the City movie, this is the service Jennifer Hudson’s character talks about throughout the film.

There’s a yearly fee to belong to the service and then you pay a fee for each bag you choose to borrow (either for the week or for the month). Sometimes the fees are pretty hefty and sometimes they are slightly more affordable. The service, though, makes me wonder – Why would you pay any amount of $$$ to rent a handbag when for the same amount of money you could possibly buy a great designer knock-off? Or just save your money to buy that really special handbag?

So I’m wondering – do any of you use this service? If so, what do you think? Do you think it’s worth the expense? Please share your thoughts with all of us!

And because I don’t want to post without offering you all a little bit of a goodie, promo code 60CREDIT will score you $60 off your first bag rental. (Of course, this is completely offset by the $59.95 joiners fee you will have to pay to use the service.)

I don’t use the service at all. I have been on there at ton just to browse, but for $60 a year plus borrowing expenses I think I would rather just hunt for good bargins.

    Ooooh. Good question!
I heard of this service when they first started out. I am a BIG handbag lover but I would much rather drop the dough on one GREAT bag once or twice a year. That is mine. To keep!

I actually got a membership for $60 and rented a few handbags. Overall my wallet suffered far more than if I were to just buy my own!

I bought the membership…and I think it’s like $20 a month or something to rent the bag (depending on if it’s like a Prada vs. a Coach)

After two months of renting I was out $100!!!

Then on ebay I found this great coach bag that went with EVERYTHING. Big, comfy, neutral colored. I ended up loving it for two solid years and still have it. I probably will put it in my “purse rotation” lol…

Seriously – save up. It’s so much better to have something forever than to waste money. Besides, it’s not like everyone doesn’t KNOW you’re renting (i.e. your handbag changes weekly and you never have the same bag twice.) lol…
